Lengthy delay on sing-bridge strengthening probed by Tory

Cllr Richard Eddy (Con, Bishopsworth) is asking Mr Ferguson at the Councillors’ question-time, prior to the Full Council on Tuesday, 15th December 2015.

The crucial City Centre river-crossing has been out of operation to motorised vehicles since late September and was scheduled to reopen to traffic by the beginning of April 2016.

Now, Cllr Eddy has learnt that there is likely to be a further delay – until at least July 2016 – which will cause additional misery to motorists and local businesses.

Cllr Eddy said:  “Prince Street swing-bridge is a key artery into the City Centre and any engineering works were bound to cause untold delays and congestion for Bristolians.

“Accordingly, I would have hoped that the temporary strengthening of the bridge would be executed swiftly and efficiently, and the knock-on inconvenience to users minimised.

“However, at the Harbourside Forum last week, I learned that the present works are unlikely to be finished until later in the summer – probably in July at the earliest.

“This is bound to be a grave concern to road users and others.

“I am aware that, in the past, there have been calls for this bridge to be permanently closed to road traffic. I hope this delay is not part of some convoluted plot to achieve this end?”
