Major progress to build the ‘missing link’ to the M49 junction has been welcomed by South Gloucestershire’s Conservatives.
Last month planning permission was granted by South Gloucestershire Council for the link road that will connect the Severnside industrial and enterprise area to the motorway network.
The link road will help relieve congestion on local roads and will unlock significant benefits for South Gloucestershire’s businesses and local communities, and will help build upon the economic potential of the area.
The Council’s previous Conservative administration made an important decision in 2021 to play a more active role in the delivery of the link road, taking over responsibility for delivering the project when previous arrangements had faltered.
Cllr Sam Bromiley, Leader of the Conservative Group on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “This road has been the missing link that’s desperately needed to relieve congestion on the roads and to boost the local economy, and I’m delighted to see that progress is being made with the approval of planning permission.
“The decision for the council to take over the running of the project in 2021 was an important step in getting the project to where it is today and for ensuring it is delivered in a timely manner.”
Luke Hall, Conservative MP for Thornbury and Yate, Said: “Our local economy received a boost when the Government scrapped the Severn Bridge Tolls a few years ago, and completing this motorway junction will further support businesses, take pressure off local roads, improve air quality and dust issues, and cut journey times for commuters.
“This is great news for Severn Beach, Pilning and the surrounding villages who have waited too long for the junction to be completed.”
Cllr Matthew Riddle, Conservative councillor for Severn Vale on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “It’s great news that planning permission has been granted for the link road.
“While the project has regrettably experienced delays, good progress is now being made to get this link road built for the benefits of the Severnside area and the wider region.”
