The Co-Op car park in Downend is to be spruced up to enhance the area for shoppers and businesses.

It follows a bid by Frenchay and Downend’s Conservative councillors to inject a bit of life into the area.

Working with the landlord of the Willows Shopping Centre, Downend, South Gloucestershire Council has reached an initial agreement with the landlord to make improvements to the car park and surrounding area.

The improvements include planting new green walls on the walkways leading from the High Street to the Co-Op car park and the resurfacing and relining of parking bays.

Charging points will be installed for electric vehicles and new signs and seating areas will also be included.

And the councillors are even hoping to see a farmers’ market on site at some point in the near future.

Cllr Ben Burton, Conservative ward member for Frenchay and Downend on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “These improvements are just what this area of Downend needs. The Co-Op car park is very well used and these additional features will ensure that the High Street and surrounding area continues to be a pleasant place to visit.

“And if we can get a farmers’ market here as well, that would really be a fantastic addition to the numerous things that Downend already has to offer.”

Cllr Liz Brennan, who also represents Frenchay and Downend on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I’m delighted to see these plans come forward and will be excited to see how the area will look once they’ve been installed.”

Like all car parks in South Gloucestershire, parking will remain free.

These improvements are being made in response to feedback from the public following the publication of a questionnaire by the Council, and will be implemented later this year.
