Vital infrastructure upgrades have been made to the area around Lyde Green Community Centre following a campaign by the local Conservative councillors.
Councillors Rachael Hunt, Colin Hunt and Alka Mehta-Graham have welcomed the additional measures that South Gloucestershire Council has implemented to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians, and to make life easier for bus users.
A new pedestrian refuge has been built on Hawthorn Way, with accompanying hand rails, to ensure school children are able to cross the road safely.
Conservative-run South Gloucestershire Council has also upgraded the school square bus stops to MetroBus stops as part of the new MetroBus project.
Other schemes to be delivered this year as part of the Willowherb traffic calming package include new zebra crossings and speed tables at key locations.
Cllr Colin Hunt, Conservative ward member for Emersons Green at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I’m delighted to see the new pedestrian refuge created on Hawthorn Way.
“Road safety is a top priority for the Conservatives locally and I’m pleased that we have been able to involve the wider community in this project as it has progressed.”
Alka Mehta-Graham, one of the Conservative candidates for Emersons Green in May’s local elections, said: “This new pedestrian refuge will provide a much safer crossing point on part of the route between the retail park at Emersons Green and the eastern part of the Lyde Green development – it’s great news for local people.”
Willowherb Road is perceived as a potential barrier to pedestrians walking or cycling in safety, despite being within a 20mph zone. Rachael, Colin and Alka will continue to monitor traffic movements in the area and will continue to press the Council to act where necessary.
