Upgrades to sports facilities in Thornbury will put the town at the top of the league, say the local Conservatives.

Luke Hall, MP for Thornbury and Yate, and Cllr Toby Savage, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, have welcomed a package of funding to help community groups improve sports provision in Thornbury.

Section 106 funding created from housing developments in the Thornbury area has enabled more than £132,000 to be given to Thornbury Town Football Club to fund a clubhouse extension at the Mundy Playing Fields.

More than £250,000 is also to be given to Thornbury Cricket Club for a new mower and to fund a new changing room, storage room and score board.

Luke Hall MP said: “I’m thrilled to see this money go to these much-loved sports clubs in Thornbury. The town contains a wealth of community groups offering first class sports provision, and it’s great to see them benefit from this funding.”

Cllr Toby Savage said: “This is brilliant news for Thornbury and for all of the town’s sports stars of the future. For the past four years, the Council has made every effort to ensure community groups such as these are able to thrive, and I’m pleased that we’re able to direct this funding to places where it will make a real difference.”

Other beneficiaries of Section 106 funding include Thornbury Rugby Club, Thornbury Tennis Club and Thornbury Town Council. The funding will also allow South Gloucestershire Council to upgrade the toilets at Page Park, Staple Hill.

This tranche of Section 106 funding adds up to more than £650,000 for community groups and sports clubs in and around Thornbury.

It comes on top of significant levels of investment in Thornbury’s infrastructure over the past four years. More than £20m has been put into the town, including £16m to improve the local schools and £4.6m for upgrades to Thornbury High Street.

South Gloucestershire Council also recently purchased the former Thornbury Hospital site to build new Extra Care Housing and pave the way for new health facilities.
