Two hard working Conservative councillors have helped to deliver a series of road improvement schemes for residents in Longwell Green.
Councillors Kris Murphy and Carol Strange, who represent the ward on South Gloucestershire Council, have successfully campaigned for a package of improvements that have seen potholes filled in, free parking introduced for parents and initial scoping work started for a pedestrian crossing on a busy part of Bath Road.
Thanks to Kris and Carol’s ongoing campaign, the length of Ellacombe Road outside Longwell Green Primary School was recently resurfaced, which will make it safer for parents and pupils attending the school.
There will now be new traffic calming measures introduced on Ellacombe Road outside the school, including a new speed table and a reduction in the speed limit to 20mph. A public consultation in this is currently ongoing and Kris and Carol encourage residents to have their say.
Kris and Carol have also helped to deliver an element of free parking, working with The Centre on Shellards Road to deliver free parking during peak school hours for parents taking their children to school. And the pair are also working with the council’s highways officers to identify the best location for a new zebra crossing on Bath Road.
Cllr Kris Murphy said: “I’m delighted to see that the campaigning that Carol and I have been doing for the past 16 months is paying off. We’ve been listening carefully to residents and urging the council to deliver these vital schemes.
“While the Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition removes free parking from across South Gloucestershire, we’re demonstrating our commitment to keeping it free – especially for those who need it most.
“We will continue to fight for the best possible deal for Longwell Green and I’m pleased to see that further schemes to improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers are currently being developed.”
A public consultation was recently run by the council on a series of new proposals for Longwell Green, which include further road resurfacing works, improved signage and streetlighting, priority road crossings for cyclists and pedestrians and new and upgraded zebra crossings. The results of this consultation are currently being assessed by highways officers.
Cllr Carol Strange said: “Road safety is one of our top priorities and I’m really pleased to see that the council has responded positively to address the issues that Kris and I have raised.”
